Why Epimetheus and Pandora?

While discussing of the name of this blog...

Colleen: Well, since you already have the Greek reference, we could name it "Epimetheus and Pandora". They were husband and wife, right?
John: Are you sure you want to be Pandora?
Colleen: I think it may be sort of fitting. I know that I tend to do, um, things.
John: I think Pandora killed Epimetheus.
Colleen: So, like I said, sort of fitting.

Looking at the sun

So, I was standing in line at FedEx and I noticed that there was woman that was wearing a tank top and a pair of very short shorts. She was a 40-something woman and had some "work done." I don't think anyone should be that surprised at the FedEx counter. Honestly, she was attractive but she went over the top to wear such skimpy things. I noticed her so that was probably her intention. The reason that I am blogging about this is the reaction of the other men in the room. The other men and including myself were following the official man-rule of looking at a woman in public. Like the sun, you can only make passing glances or your eyes will burn out. I noticed the other 4 men in the fedex office doing the same thing.

How close do I look like Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band? Just asking.....

I actually made a list of possible blog titles. Here was the other top 10 titles....

1. Epimetheus Shrugged (See entry below)
2. On the road to Birmingham (This is going to be my memoirs title actually. It seemed I was always on the road to Birmingham, AL when people called for about 2 years of my life.)
3. Montanan in the South (Also, I liked "8 years in the South and I still can't pick up a drawl").
4. JM2TW (This was my subject line during my college years when I sent out an email blast. John's Message to the World. It is a spin off to the Pope's message).
5. No, I don't let my 9 month child drink. (In response to the picture that I am using for the title)
6. The voices in my head. Why can't the engineer just shut up for once.

Why Epimetheus?

I have been thinking of starting a blog for a while now. I was really close when I was laid off in January to start posting the updates of the job search. Colleenie and I were really lucky that I had a job within 3 weeks after being thrown out of the monolith.

So, here is my blog. I am going to post things that I am interested in and Colleenie doesn't want to hear about. I don't know exactly what I am going to post or if I going to lose interest in 2 weeks.

So why Epimetheus? I am currently reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand so the initial title for the blog was going to be Epimetheus Shrugged. Epimetheus was a Greek God whose name means hind-sight and was described as foolish. He was also the brother of Prometheus ("foresight", literally "fore-thought"), a pair of Titans who "acted as representatives of mankind." Epimetheus was responsible for giving a positive trait to every animal, but when it was time to give man a positive trait, lacking foresight he found that there was nothing left. Prometheus decided that mankind's attributes would be the civilizing arts and fire, which he stole from the gods. Prometheus later stood trial for his crime.

I am obsessed with my job of being a geologist. Once I start working on a job, I want to figure everything out. I love going through old data and squeezing everything out of it. In the mean time, I lose the track time and the world around me. I am getting better but I still get a phone call from Colleen at the end of most days because I didn't realize that it is 5 o'clock.

So, here my attempt at being a blogger........
